Letter to Editor: Just ticking boxes in North may bring ticking bombs
Talks this time cannot be about ticking boxes.
Far too much is at stake. the whole community stands to lose, as the North is in danger of crumbling socially and economically into anger of a really ugly kind.
Just ticking boxes may bring ticking bombs.
Kindness and responsibility on the part of each and all (repeat all, not just the DUP & Sinn Féin) parties can work.
Everyone should have a fair shake of the biscuits. It can’t always be no Liga — no surrender out of the silo-twins: the DUP and Sinn Féin.
Let it be said, DUP does a mean “No” and have gotten lost os Liga doing that, but this time, following a lot of mourning this past week, we are all close to crying.
And all means the whole island. Lyra McKee said it: we need to have hard conversations.
We need to discuss values and proper human respect and material acceptance. It’s not about ‘my pile of Liga is higher than yours’. It’s about making lives worth living for ourselves and for our children’s children. It’s real.
We are not in the 19th century any more.
Challenges are on their way, big ones: Artificial intelligence and automation to data harvesting (we must protect our children from Data Corps’ non-stop harvesting of their personal data.
Surely the DUP and Sinn Fein agree on this?). Climate change, anyone for Brexit?
The DUP need to accept people need civil rights. Sinn Féin needs to accept there are other voices. high level, skilful mediation is needed and we all need a breakthrough.
