Cautionary approach to mobile phone health

I REFER to Hugh Sheehy’s letter (March 21) in reply to my letter concerning health impacts from mobile telephone radiation.

Cautionary approach to mobile phone health

I welcome his contribution and letter and am very happy that the debate is continuing.

There is, however, ample evidence in relevant literature that exposure to current levels of this form of radiation exerts changes in many human physiological systems.

The significance of these effects is not clear and I agree that the literature is not conclusive, but as Sir William Stewart, chair of Britain’s independent expert review group on mobile phone radiation stated, it may take a long time for effects to become obvious.

In that case, it makes sense to site mobile telephone masts away from schools and hospitals, and to limit the use of mobile telephones by young children until we are certain that long-term exposure is safe.

Irish Doctors’ Environmental Association has written to Health Minister Mary Harney to ask her to consider using the precautionary approach, in terms of the siting of masts.

Our website (www.ideaireland.org) is a work in progress and further information on this issue will be put on it as soon as possible.
