One crank doesn’t speak for all Christians

EVELYN CLEARY (Irish Examiner Letters, September 16) says she received an anonymous letter from a cowardly religious crank, criticising her for her views on abortion.

One crank doesn’t speak for all Christians

The proper response to this type of letter is simply to dismiss it with the contempt it deserves.

Ms Cleary, however, holds all Christians accountable for the words and actions of one, which is completely unjust, and uses it to introduce the notion of ‘sin’ - a religious concept which has no place in this discussion.

Naturally, the religious are accused of imposing their views. What on earth does Ms Cleary think she is doing, if not imposing her views, and insulting all who disagree with her?

She refers to “average Christians” (whoever they are) as cowards who take one or two verses from the Bible to support their own values.

Then she proceeds to do precisely that herself, using that well-worn quote about not “casting the first stone”.

As Ms Cleary well knows, the “compassionate” Jesus went on to tell the woman to sin no more.

I’m sure Jesus’s compassion would extend to all the victims of abortion, both the women who feel compelled to undergo the procedure and the little victims whose lives are ended as a result.
