Model village puts it up to cutback politicians
We are dependent on FÁS workers to maintain the community centre, the cemetery, the school, the sportsfields and the village itself for the tidy towns committee.
(Galbally won the Bord Failte national tidy towns award in 1994). Most of the people on our scheme will not get another job A simple solution would be to transfer funds from social welfare to the community employment schemes.
It is absolutely critical that these schemes be continued and that the number of participants be restored to 30,000 countrywide.
If the decision is not reversed community groups in east Limerick will be forced to mount a campaign against Government candidates in next year’s local elections.
It is not something that anyone wants to do, but the sponsors of community employment schemes feel that it is the only way to be heard and to maintain our communities.
Carol O’Brien,
Secretary,
Galbally Community Council, Galbally,
