Rottweiler approach won’t end dispute

THE row about overtime threatens the security of prisons. The prison officers are determined, and rightly so, to get a fair deal for what is, undoubtedly, one of the hardest jobs in the country.

Rottweiler approach won’t end dispute

They are dealing with some very dangerous criminals and money should not be the main factor.

The high level of injuries sustained in the course of duty results in sick leave for long or short periods.

The unsocial working hours (11-hour shifts) and working conditions are putting off many young people who had shown an interest in joining the prison service.

The arrogant and repugnant approach of the Minister for Justice, Michael

McDowell, to the security officers of the state both prison officers and gardaí, leaves a lot to be desired. He has sparked serious unrest in both services.

The Rottweiler approach will not work!

‘St Jude’s’,

Midleton,
