Lack of footpath puts residents’ lives at risk

THE residents on Maryborough Hill in Cork city have been waiting for a footpath for many years. The councillors who promised action on this issue before the local elections last year seem to have vanished into thin air.

Lack of footpath puts residents’ lives at risk

Anyone who has walked the hill will testify that the lack of a footpath is putting lives in jeopardy.

The area has a large population, many of whom have to walk the hill on a regular basis because the bus service is inadequate. I have seen school children jumping into ditches to avoid being knocked down.

I challenge county councillors to walk the hill on a dark, drizzly evening just to realise how close people come to being mown down. A huge volume of traffic travels Maryborough Hill every day. Added to this will be the heavy vehicles for the 700 new houses about to be built on the hill.

How the county council gave planning permission for such a project, without safe passage for residents, is beyond me. The powers that be in the county council should be ashamed of themselves for letting this situation drag on and on. Residents, it’s time we said ‘enough is enough’.
