Is it a speed cameraor a cash register?
I suspect it's an accountant looking for ways to create the most revenue rather than someone with knowledge of road safety.
I have been driving on the road between Mallow and Macroom regularly for the last 18 months.
Over this time I have become aware of all the accidents that happen on the stretch of road from Mallow to Sandpit House cross. I am reminded of these tragedies every day by all the roadside memorials mainly to young men who have died on this dangerous stretch.
As speed is the main cause of most accidents, I would have thought that this road would be targeted because of its bad history.
Yet I have never seen any speed trap there over the approximately 27,750 miles that I have done on it over about 75 weeks.
Ironically, on probably the safest stretch of road in north Cork the quarter-mile dual carriageway from the Cork roundabout to the Limerick roundabout in Mallow, I have seen about one speed check every week since penalty points were introduced, catching those drivers 'flying' along at 35mph.
Could someone please explain if there is a reason other than revenue-raising for this?
