Face the consequences of flouting the law
Higgins was once described as an unabashed socialist. A cynic defined a socialist as someone who never owned anything but expected everyone to share everything with him.
In our democratic republic, the overwhelming majority of owner-occupiers and tenants pay for the collection and disposal of refuse.
Former US President Richard Nixon issued a profound pronouncement, “there is no such thing as a free lunch.”
So why should Joe Higgins and his protestors not only refuse to pay for their collection and disposal of their own refuse but illegally and forcibly prevent council lorries from collecting from those who obey the law of the land and pay what is due?
Former TD Liam Lawlor resigned from Dáil Éireann before he was compelled to do so.
According to the Taoiseach, Joe Higgins should be expelled from the Dáil if he refuses to resign. He has abused our democratic system. If he were allowed to get away with this, it would be open for dissenters of any category to flout the law. I am in accord with the Taoiseach’s pronouncement.
