University scrutinises degree recipients

YOUR columnist Ryle Dwyer (Irish Examiner, November 19) is right to point to the danger of corruption in the awarding of honorary degrees, and here in Trinity College Dublin we do not award them until they have been carefully scrutinised.

University scrutinises degree recipients

Those who are awarded honorary doctorates are by a long-standing convention (which at this time perhaps needs to be strongly emphasised) not allowed to use the prefix ‘Dr’ in their daily transactions.

It would be absurd, for example, for us to refer to Dr Michael Galwey, although his honorary doctorate at Trinity is well deserved. ‘Gaillimh’ is not distinguished in virtue of his honorary doctorate, but has an honorary doctorate because of his distinction as an iconic figure in Irish rugby.
