My homeopathy pills defy scientific theory

AN editorial in the Lancet medical journal headlined ‘The end of homeopathy,’ which was reported by the Irish Examiner, has prompted me to outline my experiences with this treatment.

The theory behind the homeopathic pill is that the more diluted the solution in the pill, the more effective the medicine.

It’s this theory that is scoffed at by some scientists. They point to the fact that laboratory analysis of the pills shows that, apart from the binding substance of the pill itself (sugar, I think), there is nothing else to be found. They conclude therefore that these pills cannot have any effect on the body.

My experience seems at variance with this. I was searching for help for a health problem and read up on homeopathy.

I bought some homeopathy pills from a health food shop based on what I thought might help me. After a few days I didn’t notice any change, but on a number of occasions my elbow ‘locked’ and it took me a while to loosen it out.

On one occasion this was severe enough to prevent me from lifting the phone. I suspected the pills were to blame, so I stopped taking them and the problem with my elbow was resolved.

Thinking that this might be a coincidence I started taking the pills again, but within a few days I had the same problem with my elbow. And again, discontinuing the pills resolved the problem.

My experience seems to show that while conventional science insitsts the pills contain nothing that could have any effect on me, the fact is that I did have a side-effect.

This makes me very sceptical about the Lancet theory that “the clinical effects of homeopathy are placebo effects,” and I’m more inclined to believe it’s a case of science not having the capabilities yet to understand homeopathy.
