Council to make hill safe for pedestrians

I WISH to respond to the issues raised by Olive O’Sullivan (Irish Examiner letters, January 5).

Council to make hill safe for pedestrians

She referred to the absence of a footpath on Maryborough Hill, Douglas, in Cork, thereby endangering the lives of pedestrians on the hill, in particular schoolchildren.

Ms O’Sullivan expressed concern that neither the members of Cork County Council nor the ‘powers that be’ were doing anything to address the matter and that previous promises had “vanished into thin air”.

Members of Cork County Council have on many occasions raised this issue in the council chamber and have expressed serious concern for the safety of pedestrians walking this hill.

The officials have taken this concern on board and for some time they’ve been in negotiation with landowners with a view to securing an agreement to buy land in order to widen the road, provide a footpath, cycleway and public lighting, thereby making the area safe for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

These discussions have concluded satisfactorily and construction of this badly needed road-widening scheme will commence next May.
