Another in a long line of broken promises

THE Budget announcement of decentralisation for 2007 has deliberately distracted attention from Charlie McCreevy’s lost opportunity to invest in our social infrastructure.

Another in a long line of broken promises

The suggestion that Fianna Fail are now going to provide state-of-the-art offices for civil servants is laughable coming as it does from the same party that promised us a network of world class school buildings two years ago, and we all know what happened to that promise.

Decentralisation is another Fianna Fáil promise, under-funded and over-hyped.

The budget was all about balancing books at all costs with no regard paid to real need.

Fewer people will qualify for medical cards, despite another Fianna Fáil promise last year.

Those on the minimum wage still pay tax, and child benefit increases are marginal despite government commitments.

How many more broken promises can we take?

The Taoiseach claims that our public finances are the envy of Europe. On another occasion Mr McCreevy has said European finance ministers can’t believe how we’ve done this.

The reality is that this has been achieved by treating patients on trolleys, shutting CES schemes and teaching children in pre-fabs where the ceiling falls in. Our social infrastructure has been trashed by a government that’s in denial.

We’re not the envy of Europe... we’re its laughing stock.
