THE eagerness to help deprived nations is typical of our own hypocrisy. There are plenty of worthy causes and hungry people in Ireland, so let’s get our own house in order first before we rush to the aid of strangers.

Irish people were outraged by apartheid in South Africa, yet never thought of the Catholics north of the Border who had no say in the running of their country.

So Instead of basking in the glory of a feelgood 24-hour fast, go visit an old neighbour or give that person lying on the footpath some help.
