Liam Cosgrave should have helped committee

THE decision by the former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave to decline an invitation to assist the sub-committee on the Barron Report is regrettable.

Liam Cosgrave should have helped committee

The reason given by Mr Cosgrave was that he has retired from public life.

On May 17, 1974, 33 people, including one pregnant lady, were blasted from both public and private life by loyalist terrorists Given the criticism by Mr Justice Barron of Mr Cosgrave’s 1973-77 coalition government, specifically when Mr Justice Barron states that “the government of the day showed little interest in the bombings,” one would have thought that Mr Cosgrave would be keen to defend his government.

It should be remembered that at least some of those murdered in Dublin and Monaghan probably voted for Mr Cosgrave’s government, paid taxes which, to some degree, paid that government’s wages, and most probably, relatives of some of the victims are now paying taxes which helps to fund Mr Cosgrave’s retirement.

To behave like Pontius Pilate on an issue of such importance is unacceptable and lends credence to Mr Justice Barron’s comments on the behaviour of that government towards the victims and families of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.
