Menace of the driver who fails to go full circle
She has a valid point. Driving standards on roundabouts in Cork really are dreadful. Driving on the much maligned Kinsale Road roundabout is probably the worst case.
However, we can see crazy driving at all roundabouts, with drivers cutting across other traffic basically because they cannot be bothered to get into the correct lane before they enter the roundabout. This is despite generally excellent signage on roads leading to Cork roundabouts.
People are very critical of the Kinsale Road roundabout.
However, the majority of drivers seem to ignore the lane markings completely, despite the fact that they are completely logical. Many prefer to take a direct route across the roundabout cutting lanes to their right and left as they do so. Problems caused by people who fail to get into the correct lane beforehand are most extreme at the Kinsale Road roundabout.
In recent days I have seen a bus and an articulated lorry cut across traffic in a most dangerous way for this reason.
One driver had to ‘stand’ on his brakes to avoid going under the trailer of the ‘artic.’
One should not have constantly to wonder what other drivers are about to do on roundabouts. It should be obvious from their position on the roundabout and their signals, etc.
Your correspondent asks what are driving schools doing? This letter has been prompted by the sight of a driving instructor taking his pupil all the way around the Sarsfield Road roundabout to the fourth exit in the left-hand lane.
However, this is not the worst example of driving seen there. I once saw someone stop and reverse after he had missed his turn-off.
