Farmers urged to use new waste system

WE are delighted to see the EPA proposing the idea of aerobic digesters for agricultural waste.

This is seen as a first step towards dealing the problem in an environmentally friendly way.

We call on all farming organisations to promote this strategy.

As Dr John Curtis of the EPA said, this system of anaerobic digestion would:

1. Make us less dependent on finite fossil fuels for energy.

2. Protect our natural water supplies.

3. Help us meet the EU renewable energy directive target.

4. Give farmers a major return on a 1 billion penalty for failing to comply with new EU nitrates directive.

5. Go a long way towards our commitment to the Kyoto Treaty.

As advocates of a cleaner, healthier environment we are often the first to condemn the EPA and others for inaction. Let us now be the first to congratulate them.
