Labour should look left for its new partners
Labour Cllr Dermot Lacey says he has “a real difficulty in knowing what Sinn Féin stands for.”
If he took the trouble to read Sinn Féin’s manifesto, he would quickly find out exactly what SF stands for. Indeed he may sense déjà vu as Labour, when it was more radical, used to promote similar, albeit weaker, policies based on the principle of equality. They include:
1. A fair tax on wealth and financial speculation to fund public services.
2. Establishing a state bank to curb banking rip-offs.
3. External regulation of ‘professional’ bodies such as lawyers, consultants, IBEC, etc.
4. Right to housing in the constitution.
Labour, and Irish politics in general, would be much better off co-operating with this left-wing agenda rather than again throwing in its lot with right-wing parties, whether Fianna Fáil in Dublin city council or Fine Gael in the Dáil.
