Invoking God only when it suits them

IT IS interesting to see that Brian Cowen now wants to see God in the EU constitution. In the Dáil debate on October 16, Mr Cowen said he supported “… a reference to God or Europe’s Christian heritage in the preamble of the constitutional treaty”.

Invoking God only when it suits them

Such an ethos ignores the millions of non-Christians, especially Muslims, already living in EU states, and millions more awaiting entry to the EU in Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, Cyprus and Turkey.

It also seems a bit late for Iveagh House to be invoking God to guide Irish foreign policy. In what corner of Iveagh House was God hiding when Ireland did nothing about the human rights abuses of Saddam Hussein in his war against Iran in the 1980s, and his slaughter of Shia Muslims in Basra in 1991?
