DAVID STOREY relates how Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe), now an opponent of abortion on religious grounds, was asked what she would say to those who believed that religion should have nothing to do with the issue (Irish Examiner, February 16).

Almost two centuries ago, similar questions were put to slavery opponents on both sides of the Atlantic by those who believed that slave ownership should be a matter of personal choice, along with the claim that abolitionists were seeking to impose their religiously-based values on others.

Today, that religiously-based imposition is seen as a fundamental human right and in line with true liberalism.
