Counting the cost of deportations

I have two questions for Minister McDowell:

Counting the cost of deportations

1. Where is the Government getting the enormous amount of money required to pay for the deporting of failed asylum-seekers when it can't find the money for essential services such as maternity hospitals and adequate accommodation for brain-injured teenagers? Surely, it would be better to let these people stay and work in the country, thereby allowing them to contribute to our economic well-being. I'd say their contribution is badly needed.

2. Where did the Government find the 40 or so gardaí to accompany these people to find their home countries when they can't find enough gardaí to put on the streets of this country?

While I have the opportunity, I would like to ask one question of RTÉ. Why did they send their crime correspondent, Paul Reynolds, to cover the deportation story when no crime had taken place?
