Language priorities

IN response to John Alan O'Donovan's letter (Irish Examiner, April 11), he should be the last to complain if he was obliged by his own logic to study a foreign language for 13 years.

That is the essential difference between studying Irish and other languages: the former is native, the latter are foreign.

While I support the learning of a foreign language this cannot be regarded in the same light as a native language, and it is naïve of Mr O'Donovan to do so.
