Referendum is about good governance

I WOULD like to respond to the observation by Labour Party spokesperson of Justice, Mr Costello TD, that the number of people seeking asylum in this country is now falling and the possible implications that this might have for the citizenship referendum.

Referendum is about good governance

Firstly, it is a fact that approximately 90% of applications for asylum in the state to date were judged to have been unfounded after due process. Such a huge levels of abuse was bringing the asylum system into disrepute.

As a result of measures taken by the Government to uphold the integrity of the asylum system, the number of applications has begun to fall. This is an example of good governance, pure and simple.
