One-off housing rules need to be relaxed

I WISH to compliment Pat Brosnan for his comprehensive report (Irish Examiner, July 12) of a meeting of Cork County Council where members were unanimous in calling for a radical streamlining of the planning process.

The Cork councillors are pressing for a relaxation of the planning regulations governing one-off houses, which are major a headache for many people who want to build on the family farm or on a site given to them free gratis.

Everything looks to be in order when the development plan is adopted, but when you apply for planning permission everything, it would seem, changes dramatically, resulting in refusal after refusal.

Congratulations to the councillors and Pat Brosnan for highlighting these problems.

Hopefully justice will prevail for the victims - myself included - of the very costly planning process.
