Unfinished business on the immigrant front
A few years ago the Government announced it had secured a readmission agreement with Nigeria whose citizens failed to meet the criteria for asylum here.
In the meantime we have given them more than €7 million in grant aid (laughable when you consider they are the world's fourth largest oil producer and far richer than we will ever be) and still there's no readmission agreement in effect.
Perhaps even before the Government introduces legislation on citizenship rights, they might at least ensure they have readmission agreements with the top five asylum application countries.
Why do we continue to receive nearly half of all applications for asylum from Nigeria, reject almost all of them and then have the gravest difficulty in returning the applicants to their country of origin? Let's get FF's slogan closer to reality little done, much more to do.
