Points lose their plus
I suspect that the main reason for this is simply lack of enforcement. Presumably, the gardaí are handicapped by overtime constraints, yet another example of the Government’s “no cutbacks” policy.
I should have thought that the present level of fines would have made traffic surveillance self-financing and, on some roads at least, highly profitable.
It also seems ridiculous that Ireland permits the sale of high-performance cars. There is no point in buying such a vehicle unless you intend to use it and, by and large, this means regularly breaking the speed limits.
Surely it would make sense to ban such vehicles or, at the very least, to introduce totally prohibitive levels of road tax and insurance for them.
