A FEW years ago, in the early hours of the morning, a young man drowned when he fell into the River Lee from the sea wall that runs between Glenbrook and Monkstown.

After this tragedy, Cork County Council installed safety ladders and 12 lifebuoys in accessible containers to help prevent this happening again.

While out walking recently, I discovered to my horror that all but five of the 12 lifebuoys are missing. I learned from a local fisherman that they are thrown into the river by moronic revellers “for laughs.” What happens if one of them falls in?
