Gibson brings us back to the ultimate reality
I recommend it to all worthy of the name Christian. It is simply the story of the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life, but told by Mel Gibson as violently as can be imagined.
In reality, it is more overpowering than we had learned at our mothers’ knees or in primary school.
The scourging was a bit overdone, I thought, as no human could survive that type of violence, even for seconds.
But otherwise I came away with a great feeling of peace, feeling more grateful to Jesus for suffering so much for me and for all sinners. His love really shines forth and it brings people back to the reality that we are all only passing through.
The Pope is reported to have said of the film: “It is as it was.“
I agree.
