Farmer critic ignored real pollution culprits

I AM amazed you would allow Seán de Paor (Irish Examiner letters, August 13) make a sweeping statement accusing farmers of being the main contributors to waterway pollution.

Farmer critic ignored real pollution culprits

He conveniently ignored recent events: two separate incidents involving chemical companies discharging waste into Cork Harbour one of which went undetected for eight months.

At the same time a whale dies in Cork harbour and is "promptly" dumped at sea. No farmer is allowed dispose of dead animals in this manner.

We also had a sewage treatment plant in Co Meath responsible for killing 4,000 fish in the River Inny, which is popular with tourists.

The amount of damage being done by overloaded sewage treatment plants is grossly underestimated. These plants cannot cope with the population growth around our towns and villages.

Dollymount Strand in Dublin is a typical example. This year it got a Blue Flag for the first time. Why? Because a new sewage treatment plant was installed above the bay.

In future, Mr de Paor would do well to ask himself this question before he flushes: "Am I, too, contributing to pollution?"
