Teenager shocked by councillors’ mentality
However, this seems to have been ignored by city councillors because, under a public-private partnership, schools and clubs may be allocated only a fraction of the hours they have now. I went to the City Hall meeting recently and was shocked by the mentality of the councillors who seemed to think only of profit. Is there a need for financial profit in a community-based learning facility? Surely the public good is profit enough.
It was a shock to me as a 15-year-old to see how the committee functions. They kept the information on this merger a secret from the people it would most affect for as long as possible.
The public should realise that one of the city’s most valuable assets is in danger and they should protest, if not for themselves, then for the sake of future swimmers and lifeguards.
As for the councillors, they should remember that quality of life comes before quantity of money.
