THE recent decision by the Colombian courts to overturn the acquittal verdict of the Colombia Three has once again brought to the fore certain worrying tendencies in Ireland.

This is namely the decision to give political backing to the Colombian regime for reasons of political expediency at home.

Colombia is routinely referred to as a democracy and the courts’ decision is seen as one which should be respected. Between 1965 and 1989 Colombia’s death squads (more commonly referred to as the paramilitaries) were legal. Their legal status was again revived in the mid-1990s under the guise of the rural security co-operatives, Convivir. These were widely promoted by President Uribe when he was governor of Antioquia.
