I didn't attempt to dictate to ASTI, says Dempsey

I REFER to the letter from Phil Robert published in the Irish Examiner on Wednesday, April 7.

I didn't attempt to dictate to ASTI, says Dempsey

When I wrote to the ASTI about their convention suggesting the change in format, I had no invitation from them.

Therefore, Mr Robert's allegation of trying to dictate is unfounded.

I am pleased that the unions have now accepted my suggestion and I will be in attendance at all three conferences.

Mr Robert referred to the fact that I had stated I was willing to take questions from the floor at last year's convention, but that I had failed to do so.

I can assure him I was willing to answer questions (by the way, his was not the only hand raised), but the chairman of the session closed it immediately after I concluded my speech.

My 'Royal County upperosity' does not extend to usurping the authority of the president of his union.

I did, however, stay around the conference hotel for well over an hour afterwards and met many delegates.

We have now agreed a changed format and I look forward to engaging with ASTI at the convention.

Minister for Education and Science,
