Tourists can see how we rip them off

SUZANNE HARRINGTON’S piece (Irish Examiner, Sept 6) concerning the need for tourists to go shopping with bales of euro, expect to pay for the petrol in the pub and carry their shopping home in their respective ‘shoes’ made for most amusing reading.

Tourists can see how we rip them off

Were it not so accurate, it would be funny.

Working at the cutting edge of the industry, the comments one now hears from our overseas visitors are becoming less and less positive.

The fact is that tourists are indeed a bemused and beguiled species who are finding it hard to accept that even the most mundane accessory a bottle of mineral water, for example costs over 2 euro in most pubs.

Many of them are en route via other European countries and are getting an overall 'euroview' which shows Ireland as a mean spirited and very overpriced destination.

The uniqueness of the Irish/island/craic discovery holiday is now being diluted by so many non-nationals working in 'front-of-house' operations. This is not a racist comment it's just a recognition of reality.

Our visitors want the 'Irish package' very special, very cost attractive and, most of all, a very geniune Irish experience.
