The majority of smokers are decent people whose only vice is nicotine.

If they have health problems they have paid for their healthcare well in advance through the huge taxes on tobacco. If a pub employee objects to smoking he or she should have chosen another job. Mr Ahern, in effect, has branded smokers as indecent and he should apologise to them.
