MAY I respond to the claim by Stephen Fallon that the Orange Order stands for “civil and religious freedom”. (Irish Examiner letters, March 12)?

He goes back to 1576 to prove his point. More recent evidence would suggest that the Orange Order's idea of civil and religious liberty did not embrace all religious traditions equally.

A collection of Orange and Protestant Songs, published in 1907, with the authority of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland and the Grand Black Chapter of Ireland, tells a different story to that outlined by Mr Fallon.
