Let’s have a health service financed by taxation

YOUR correspondent Phil Duggan makes a point, but misses the point on health policy (Irish Examiner letters, January 10).

Let’s have a health service financed by taxation

The real issue is not whether neo-conservative PDs should push for an open market in health insurance, but the fact that the citizens of this country should expect a top-class national health service financed through direct taxation possibly with an insurance element as in other EU states and free at the point of delivery.

This would be a health service based on addressing need rather than ability to pay; an equality in provision rather than different levels and quality of service dependent on whether you have private insurance or not. Those who pay high insurance premiums do not lie in corridors.
