With characteristic disdain, Minister for the Environment Martin Cullen dismissed opposition calls for his resignation after the abandonment of the massively expensive electronic voting system, a project for which he was directly responsible.

Having spent €40 million on the system itself, and another €4 million in a publicity campaign to persuade a sceptical electorate of its doubtful virtues, it will be mothballed for at least another two years.

Yesterday, the Commission on Electronic Voting told the minister and Government what countless other people had already told him it is not a safe system to which the votes of the people can be entrusted.
