What’s the difference between a ‘settler’ and an ‘immigrant?’ It's a question I was to consider many times in making my documentary Éire agus na Chéad Náisiúin (Ireland and the First Nations), which explores the role of Irish people in the creation of the United States and to a lesser extent Canada. 

We looked at this story not just through our eyes but through the eyes of the people we displaced and at times attacked, even massacred. It opens up a new line in the story we tell ourselves about Irish America — one which may not be comfortable viewing for everybody.
