On the day before the European elections last week, sitting MEP Clare Daly tweeted out a plea for votes: “As MEP for Dublin, I’ve done what I said I’d do. I’ve worked to carry the voices of the people of Ireland to the EU.”

On that and preceding days, a number of celebrities and quasi-left-wing figures took to social media to endorse her candidacy.
