A SERIES of wet summers has impaired the growth of wild flowers in wetland areas along the River Shannon, according to recent research.

Also highlighted is a need for flexible management to deal with flooding and other conditions that can vary from year to year in the Shannon Callows, one of Ireland’s most notable wetlands.

Somebody always seems to be studying the callows, often people with an interest in wild birds. However, the area is also renowned for its diverse plant and flower life, which is the subject of doctorate research by Caitriona Maher of University College Galway.
