Upsetting the public on the Rocky Road

A fascinating exhibition reveals how works of art have caused outrage through the years, writes Tina O’Sullivan

Upsetting the public on the Rocky Road

ARTISTS must go to extreme lengths these days to shock a public that has seen it all. The Rocky Road is a new exhibition at The Crawford Gallery, Cork, which retraces the stories of art works that ruffled feathers over the past few decades.

Curator Seán Lynch brought the show together. “I guess in some way I became interested in how creative forms are, in how the forms or expressions of art exist in a very lateral way across society,” he says. “I work as an artist as well, so this has been a pet project of mine for several years, to try and understand how these moments or particular instances that sometimes are forgotten about quite quickly, still exist. They are in my view quite important moments, where you get these clashes between how art operates and how society views it.”
