IF I HAD written down everything I said last week, I’d have to admit to you today that I got one detail wrong. Early in July, while still absorbed in the British general election and having stayed up half the night to watch that cataclysmic US debate, I wrote here that in his heart of hearts Joe Biden knew what the right thing to do was, and I had total faith he’d do it.
On July 16, after more dramatic moments I also wrote about here — I compared them to scenes from The Manchurian Candidate — Trump emerged from his convention as virtually unbeatable. He certainly couldn’t be beaten by an ageing president. I wrote then that Joe Biden had a week left to do the right thing.
