Clodagh Finn: At last – the ‘Irish Helen of Troy’ is on TV

The Derbforgaill character in the RTÉ documentary drama ‘Invasion: The Normans’.

I punched the air when I saw Derbforgaill (or Derval), the so-called Gaelic Helen of Troy, make an appearance among the beardy power-players glowering with purpose in the absorbing documentary, Invasion: The Normans which aired on RTE1 last Sunday.

The two-parter is billed as a real-life Game of Thrones. It is a clever conceit because the wrangle for power between provincial kings in 12th-century Ireland does indeed have a fictional echo in the HBO mega-hit.
