Anglo-Irish relations: Show of unity
In a letter to Co-operation Ireland chairman Christopher Moran, Theresa May states: “This year has also shown how sensitive anniversaries and events that once had the potential to divide us can be handled in ways that are inclusive, respectful and are designed to promote shared understanding.”
We sometimes tend to forget that our shared history, fraught though much of it has been, also includes shared culture and identity. Irish people living in Britain generally feel comfortable and at home there.
There are also thousands of British people here who live among us, are welcome and regarded as one of our own.
While the future paths of our two nations are about to diverge, it is incumbent on all of us to ensure that not only economic bonds are maintained but also the ties of friendship.
