Instead of centenary let’s focus on next five years

When launching the Government programme of centenary commemorative events, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said we should take the opportunity to imagine the future of the Irish State over the next 100 years.

Far wiser he cut his target to the next five-year term of office, learn from the past and concentrate on the present.

It’s five weeks since the people have spoken and expressed their options for future action. Fortunately, with no Government in place, nothing unmanageable has occurred in the meantime.

One hundred-year-old politics are obviously more intriguing for Mr Kenny than facing the reality of the nation’s requests in 2016.

The uncertainty in the fact Fine Gael has hired a 40ft container to store election posters safely in the event of another General Election, begs the question — Who’s fooling who?

Will the Exchequer reduce candidates’ expense allowances in such event, bearing in mind the stored second-hand posters are on the ready? A repeat General Election is an unnecessary and unwanted expense doomed for disaster;. Too many disillusioned souls will refrain from voting again.
