GAA is great because it’s an amateur sport

The answer to Brendan O’Brien’s assertion in his article ‘Professionalism in the GAA is steaming down the tracks’ (Irish Examiner, January 15) is contained in his own article when he quotes Eugene McGee as saying that it would be ‘a recipe for disaster’.

The GAA may be unique in the world as it has unpaid players who play for their locality, parish, or county. The rest of us may not have the best team to support but it represents our particular neck of the woods and is not funded by some foreign oligarch.
