The world of Navratilova and Goolagong, the world of Laver and N?astase, even the world of McEnroe and Borg is, if the accusations made by Novak Djokovic that he was offered €183,000 to fix a match eight years ago are substantiated, as sleazy as any other contest attracting the attention of gamblers — or money launderers. Just as the GAA seems to have an issue with widespread gambling among players, tennis has been put on the defensive over allegations around gambling.

It may have been naive to imagine that the soul of tennis was as pure, as unmarked, as the whites still insisted on by authorities at Wimbledon but our world and its overpowering greed has a way of shaping things, anything, to its own end.
