We need to act on the President’s call to protect the victims of war

The past year will forever be remembered for the tragedy which unfolded on the high seas and at Europe’s frontiers. In the face of such horrors, people across the country have demanded action showing that the “migrant nation” — as it was described by President Higgins — has not forgotten its own history.
The Immigrant Council of Ireland has highlighted a number of areas where leadership is required. Efficient procedures must be put in place which allow people to restart their lives, including reuniting families, right to work and training. The most vulnerable — including those trafficked for sex and labour exploitation, stateless persons and children travelling alone — must be identified and offered protection and support to recover.
