Catholic Church is not a democracy, no matter how many people vote

I wish to reply to a letter “Catholic Church should allow priests to Marry” (Irish Examiner, June 4). Mr Devitte suggests we hold two referenda: One to allow priests get married and one to allow women become priests.

Catholic Church is not a democracy, no matter how many people vote

I suggest Mr Devitte doesn’t know much about the Catholic Church. The Church is not a democracy. It doesn’t matter how many people decide to change a truth of the Church, it can’t happen. Our Church will not change after recent referenda. In our church, marriage (as ordained by God) is a vocation and a sacrament. Marriage is for life and there is no re-marriage after divorce.

Priesthood is also a vocation and a sacrament. As we all know, Jesus (we believe he is the Son of God), chose only men for a reason. As a woman I believe we have a different input into our Church. As only women can have babies it is quite obvious that God made us as we are for a very good reason.
