Antibiotic resistance - Killer threat we must confront

THE discovery of antibiotics probably changed our world more than anything other than the invention of the wheel, money, or the myriad uses we found for oil.

Antibiotic resistance - Killer threat we must confront

Antibiotics literally defied death and allowed people survive those small, niggling infections we hardly notice any more. Simple cuts once infected, often killed, as did common ailments like pneumonia or tuberculosis.

The idea of asking for a hip replacement or a new knee was almost like signing a death warrant but antibiotics helped prevent operating theatre infections and were a game changer.

It is therefore tragic that that great liberation is in jeopardy because of over use and evolution. The development of ever more powerful antibiotics led to over use and the lethal bugs they once so effectively destroyed became resistant to them.

The potential for this simple equation to change our world is almost beyond comprehension. Without a ready supply of effective antibiotics, the Dark Ages might well move from our past to our future.

Tragically that is not overstating the case — a world where antibiotics no longer stand between us and simple, routine death brought by “superbugs” would indeed be a grim place.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to human health and everyone — medical professionals and patients — must play a role in preserving these lifesaving miracle drugs.
