Re the Derek Brockwell escape from Tallaght Hospital and the injury of prison officers: why are prisoners being treated as ordinary public outpatients and inpatients when they are not ‘ordinary’?

Twenty or so years ago, the Department of Justice buried a report on the treatment of prisoners, which recommended that a secure facility be constructed onto a major Dublin Hospital.

I am not sure why the department rejected this; perhaps money, perhaps philosophy. However, had it been acted upon, then last week’s events may not have taken place.
